Particle Counters And Detectors
Our family of particle counters and particle detectors contain instruments optimized for a variety of applications. In environmental research and monitoring, customers face high concentrations in city centers, near freeways or harbors, or very low concentrations in remote locations which are used as reference sampling points.

Silicon Charged Particle Radiation Detectors
ORTEC introduced the first silicon surface barrier detectors for charged particle spectroscopy in the early 1960’s. Since then, ORTEC has expanded the product line with more than ten different options to choose from.

Integrated UHPLC Systems
LC-4000 Series
The LC-4000 Series UHPLC system offers high performance separations at up to 130MPa (around 20,000psi) for use with the smallest particle sizes and longest column lengths. The pump, autosampler and detectors are optimized for the smallest band broadening and fastest cycle times.

Neutron Detectors
As a neutron has no charge, a neutron detector incorporates a neutron-to-ionisation particle converter. The incident neutrons are captured by the converter material which then produces (detectable) ionising particles by means of a nuclear reaction.Photonis gas-filled detectors are designed to detect thermal neutrons (En < 0.025 eV), so the capture cross-section of the detecting material must be as large as possible for this low energy. We therefore use 235U (580 barn at 20 °C) for our fission chambers, and 10B (3840 barn at 20 °C) for our boron-lined proportional counters.

Centrifugal FFF
CF2000
The new advanced Postnova CF2000 Series was developed to become the first professional modular Centrifugal FFF system available. It is completely controled by the NovaFFF single software platform which runs the entire system from autosampler to detectors. The CF2000 Centrifugal FFF incorporates the combined proven know-how and the technologies from three decades of leadership in FFF. Due to its unique design, the CF2000 Centrifugal FFF system offers more flexibility, higher robustness and better performance than traditional particle sizer systems. The CF2000 allows high resolution particle separation and sizing at the same time and consequently sets a complete new standard and offers a real alternative to traditional particle characterization techniques.

Alpha Spectroscopy
Alpha spectroscopy is used to identify and quantify radionuclides based on the alpha particles emitted in the decay process. Similar to Gamma Spectroscopy, energy spectra are generated with high precision detectors and electronics and analyzed with special software. Typically, samples are measured following chemical separation to isolate the radionuclides of concern due to the complexity associated with correcting for these interferences with spectrum analysis software as is common for many Gamma Spectroscopy measurements.

Electron Multipliers
Electron multipliers are mainly used as positive/negative ion detectors. They are also useful for detecting and measuring vacuum UV rays and soft X-rays. Hamamatsu electron multipliers have a high gain (multiplication factor) yet low dark current, allowingoperation in photon counting mode to detect and measure extremely small incoming particles and their energy. This means our Hamamatsu electron multipliers are ideal for electron spectroscopy and vacuum UV spectroscopy such as ESCA (electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis) and Auger electron spectroscopy as well as mass spectroscopy and field-ion microscopy.

NIM-Modules
The "dual channel" TDC'''' - Model 7072T - converts time directly to a digital output. They offer improved performance and linearity specifications compared to separate TAC and ADC modules. There is also the Wilkinson-type ADC, Model 7070 which is suitable for high resolution HPGe detectors. Our Constant-Fraction discriminators are still state-of-the-art even after a more than 20 Year history. The Differential CFD - Model 7029A - still offers the highest counting rate (>50 MHz) of any such devices. Our Pulse-Shape Discriminator - Model 2160A - can be used to separate neutron and gamma particles, alphas and protons, electrons and alphas etc depending on the detector used.

Non Destructive Testing (NDT)
NDT covers a wide group of testing techniques used to evaluate the properties of a material, part, product, weld or system without causing damage. NDT carried out at KLL includes:Liquid Penetrant Testing (LPT) is used for the detection of surface breaking discontinuities on magnetic and non-magnetic metallic materials.Fluorescent and colour contrast penetrants are available to be used in the following methods:-Water washableSolvent removablePost emulsifiableMagnetic Particle Inspection (MT/MPI) is used for the detection of surface breaking and slightly sub-surface (up to 2mm) discontinuities.Bench type crack detectors and portable units are employed producing various waveforms (i.e. A.C, HWDC and induced magnetic flow) to give both circular and longitudinal magnetism.On-site testing is carried out using electro magnetic yokes and permanent magnets producing induced magnetic flow.Ultrasonic Flaw Detection (UT), also known as Ultrasonic Inspection, is used for the detection of volumetric discontinuities in ferrous and non-ferrous products (forgings and castings etc.), and welds in magnetic and non-magnetic materials.UT is capable of penetrating metals, dependent on the material characteristics, up to 10m in length. Some thickness and depth checks can also be carried out using ultrasound.Radiography services are available through sub-contract booked in advance. Notice is required for on-site work.Personnel are available at short notice for in-house or on-site work in the UK and overseas. All inspectors undertaking non destructive testing (LPT, MT/MPI and UT) are qualified to, and meet a minimum of, PCN Level 2.PCN Level 3 supervision is available in-house for LPT, MT/MPI, UT offering consultancy services including procedure writing and commentary, auditing of techniques and Level 3 Supervisor cover. We can assist clients in product qualification, material testing, quality assurance and audit programmes.
